Thornton C. “Doc” Grubb, 93, of Findlay, passed away on January 9, 2016 at The Heritage. He was born March 21, 1922 to the late Chester H. and Jeannette F. (Neubauer) Grubb. Thornton married Sarah Compton Rayle on December 19, 1952 and she preceded him in death on November 15, 2003.
Doc was a devoted husband and father that loved hunting, fishing, and exploring Indian artifacts in Black Mesa, NM and ruby mining in Franklin, NC. He enjoyed playing the piano throughout his life, entertaining in a band in his early years. Doc was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, a member of the Auxiliary Highway Patrol, past president of both Findlay and Cooper fishing clubs, past president of an antique club and an antique dealer with his wife Sarah. His faith and his family were the light of his life. Doc was employed by Patterson’s, Automotive Fibers and retired as a Credit Manager from Cooper Tire & Rubber Company in 1984. He continued to test drive cars for Cooper for an additional 12 years until 1996. Doc proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman, where he earned the nickname “Doc” for his medical duties. He was trained and protected by the 4th Marines Unit in the South Pacific while establishing advance base hospitals on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. Doc served in both World War II and the Korean wars, being in the battle of Guadalcanal and Edson’s (Bloody Bridge) battle. Doc loved frequenting the Pilgrim Restaurant and the Waffle House. Doc is survived by his daughter Marna (Jim) Mulroney of Findlay; granddaughters, Traci Morgan of Hatboro, PA, and Heather (Aaron) Pishalski of Melbourne, FL; and great-grandchildren, Devon and Ryan Pishalski, Tyler Becker, and Kaylee Sarah Muntz.
Friends and family may visit on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at HUFFORD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Manor Hill Rd, Findlay (419-422-1500). A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 13 at 10:00 A.M. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 935 W. Bigelow Ave, Findlay, with Pastor Denny Maurer officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior (9:00 – 10:00) to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery with the Hancock County Veteran’s Memorial Squad performing full military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Thornton’s name may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or Bridge Home Health and Hospice.
